Was it stolen with the keys?
Hard to tell on the video - but it appears he made short work of the ignition and immob if it wasnt with them!

Isn't this what has been happening to bmw cars?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

You can see the laptop open as he walks to the car then puts it on the passenger seat and then plugs something Into the obd and it starts and he drives off

Mods yes but way too many to stick in this little box

Unless I've missed it

at 3.58 in the video he walks up to the car and unlocks it..........

All the lights come on. puddle lights, front/rear the lot... leaving home that is. so I suspect he had a working key but one perhaps that was not coded to the immobilsor?  Perhaps he used one of those frequency catcher thingy-ma-bobs.

Then he fumbles about inside.

Being a pre-2007 car you can easily get tools which can read the cars SKC (immob security code) and reprogram a key or disable the immobilsor alltogether .

He obviously had a remote fob to get in, and a pre-cut blade (or a selection of blades) at the very least.

The older pin based immos can be quickly and easily bypassed and coded via OBD, on the older platform cars (ME7/EDC15, even EDC16 which covers a lot of the VAG diesels) you can even buy self-contained devices that plug in and remove the immo via OBD2 in no time at all. Didnt find anything for the ME9 TFSI though, but i didn't look very hard

To me that looked far too quick for a proper read/write of the immo data, so perhaps he had something similar or some kind of emulator?

maybe he used a bluetooth device to plug into the OBD and read the immo data , or do you still need ignition on for the OBD port to actually work?

The OBD port only works with the ignition on.

As I said, and as Dan said also mentioned, he probably had a remote fob already coded to the car's frequency and must have had some sort of pre-cut key.
I suspect there is more to this than meets the eye.

use vagcom or vagtacho and try to do anything with the ignition off........

you may need to cycle through ignition to save/reset certain settings this is very normal.
